Glenaros Shepherd’s Cottage is a nice cottage in a great location and as a dog owner I particularly appreciated that it was dog-friendly and that the garden was (reasonably!) secure. Compared to some other cottages I have been in, including the one for my second week on Skye, the decor was a little bit shabby in places - really just thinking of the hall that led to the bathroom and lean-to shed at back door (bit of damp damage low down on wall here). This didn’t actually bother me at all as everything else was great. The cottage has character and not been interfered with too much. I had problems with the heating, hot water and boiler but this was fixed immediately (within the hour) by Andrew, so that was fantastic service.
I would definitely go back to this cottage as had a really nice time and the views are lovely.  I am thinking about it for next year and just need to check dates.

The cottage is in a beautiful location with outstanding views. As it is part of a farm, surrounded by sheep and farm workings the garden and approach certainly reflect this!  The cottage was outstandingly well equipped in the kitchen area, and lounge and bedrooms were comfortable if a little old fashioned but then you are staying in an old cottage.  The bathroom was very acceptable although the area outside the bathroom needed tidying up. There were extra electric heaters which were welcome. We loved Mull and its people were very friendly

History of Shepherds Cottage

The cottage was built by Duncan Fletcher, to house the estate shepherd, with stone from an earlier building on the site.

The rear of the cottage, now a bathroom , larder and small bedroom, was originally a byre for the shepherd to house his cow, and there was a traditional box bed bed built into the wall of what is now the kitchen.

The cottage was in continual use for the shepherd until the early 1960’s, except for a period during the second world war when it was let to Captain Callum Black of the Lohinvar, one of David Macbrayne’s most respected sea captains, who lived there with his five children!

Shepherd’s Cottage is situated on the hill above Aros bridge. It has the best views of all the cottages with a superb panorama of Aros Castle and the Sound of Mull.
It is situated centrally on the island so ideal for exploring both the South and North areas of Mull and is perfect for  birdwatching, photography, walking or just relaxing and looking out to sea. The small village of Salen where you will find a restaurant, hotel and well stocked shop is only a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk along the coast road, where you may see otters and seals on the rocks. The cottage provides basic accommodation in a lovely country peaceful setting.
