PS Waverley @ Salen Pier, Mull, PA72 6JL 13:00-13:30 & 18:00 Salen Pier Limited is very pleased to announce that after being approached by the team at the iconic PS Waverley charity, about 18th months ago, she will be making her inaugural visit on Tuesday 27th May as part of her ‘Oban & The Inner Hebrides Cruises’ 2025 week. Since purchasing Salen Pier in 2007 in a run down condition, I have taken the time and costs to restore it back to a working pier. Copying the outline of the original, two buildings have been built and fitted out to a high standard – they are the only holiday accommodation on a pier in the UK !! After extensive restoration, we have been welcoming vessels since 2012, the first being a good sized SSF wellboat, using the deep water at the head of the pier. Since then I have had a number of visiting vessels, including the Flying Dutchman, Lord of the Glens, and Lady Avenel – pictures on my website https://www.salenpier.com/Photo.htm Salen Pier was a main access/departure point from 1905 to 1964 when the last ferry visited, prior to Craignure opening, and being the focal point as we know it now. It will be great to welcome such an iconic vessel to the pier – the last sea going paddle steamer in the world. The pier used to have paddle steamers, so this will be fantastic to see again. I don’t know the year, but here is an image of the PS Grenadier at my pier. I am lead to believe she was lost to a fire in 1927, so prior to then! https://i0.wp.com/www.dalmadan.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Grenadier-Salen117.jpg?ssl=1 I am in discussion with the local community, including Salen school, to make this a day to remember for all. The PS Waverley team are pleased to announce the following: “Paddle Steamer Waverley will return to Oban and the Inner Hebrides in 2025 as she marks the 50th Anniversary of her first sailing in preservation after being purchased for £1. The iconic steamer will sail into Oban on the evening of Monday 19th May as she embarks on a variety of cruises around the Inner Hebrides. This year’s sailing programme has several highlights including the ship’s FIRST EVER call at Salen Pier on the Isle of Mull which is scheduled for Tuesday 27th May. Waverley’s special sailing on 27th May will start in Oban before she steams through the Sound of Mull to berth at Salen where she will remain alongside the pier for a short time to give those aboard the opportunity to step ashore and take a photograph to record the occasion. Waverley will collect passengers from Salen, will then sail to Tobermory before giving a stunning afternoon cruise rounding Ardnamurchan giving views of the lighthouse situated on the most westerly point on the British mainland. The steamer will then cruise round Muck before retracing her passage back to Tobermory, Salen and Oban. For those intending passengers from Oban there is the opportunity to take advantage of Waverley’s ever popular “Bring a friend FREE offer” open to seniors (aged 60 and over) if tickets are purchased in advance. Waverley’s first ever visit to Salen has been made possible thanks to the current pier owner who has invested in the historic structure to refurbish it and build the only holiday accommodation on a pier in the UK. Tickets for Waverley’s Oban and Inner Hebrides sailings can be purchased online at waverleyexcursions.co.uk or by calling the booking office on 0141 243 2224.” ++++ So all indications are that it will be a historic day for all to witness and enjoy. More details will be made available nearer the time for public access to shore facilities. Parking will be limited to ticket holders, so if wishing to view, please plan to walk from Salen village.
